What we know for certain is that after this picture was taken 27 years ago, the wheel was smashed, hauled on to the back of a lorry and gone for ever.

Built by Martins of Exeter and in superb condition, the Exwick Wheel should surely have been saved and put in a museum, but everything happened so fast that no one evidently had a chance to raise any objections.
